What is Hyperhidrosis and Various Treatment Alternatives
Hyperhidrosis
Sweating is a natural body mechanism to regulate the body temperature. Although sweating is a normal process, excessive amount of sweat is produced by a condition called Hyperhidrosis causing discomfort and embarrassment.
The signs and symptoms of Hyperhidrosis
The major signs of excessive sweating are sweat-soaked clothes, and feelings of utter humiliation and discomfort. Nevertheless, underarm sweating is quite common. There are different underarm antiperspirants that you will see an aisle in the grocery for these items.
Head & Facial sweating
Some people suffer from head and facial sweating. These people are used to holding a small towel or handkerchief in order to remove the sweat droplets dripping off their heads and faces. They get so embarrassed because of the non-stop dripping of sweat droplets even if they are in a cold room.
Reasons for Hyperhidrosis
Under ordinary conditions, the hypothalamus in the brain regulates sweat-related functions by sending sensory signals to the sweat nerves. These nerves, part of the sympathetic nervous system, located in the chest cavity send the signals to the sweat glands causing the latter to produce sweat. Because of hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands disobey these signals as it were and produce substantial volumes of sweat that seek outlets on our underarms, face, palms, and feet.
Facial and head Hyperhidrosis treatments:
Anticholinergic drugs
A dermatologist may prescribe anticholinergic drugs to decrease sweating. These drugs block the stimulation of sweat glands by acting against acetylcholine. However, anticholinergic drugs have side effects. The side effects are diarrhea, nausea, rashes, and others.
Iontophoresis
This procedure uses water to pass electricity to the skin to stop sweat production. The procedure may look uncomfortable, though it is not. The downside of using Iontophoresis is that series of treatments needed depending on the response of the patient. For the results, it may take two to three sessions and a maintenance treatment.
Botox injections
Just like Iontophoresis, series of botox injections needed before the wanted results achieved. Nonetheless, unlike iontophoresis, botox injections may be uncomfortable and slightly painful.
Surgey
With surgery, a part of the sweat gland’s nerve supply destroyed. Nevertheless, there are many possible complications to surgery. This option is rarely used.
Excessive sweating can be embarrassing in social situations. For someone with Hyperhidrosis, it is natural to feel low esteem and anxiety when meeting and interacting with people. Unfortunately, this condition can be distracting and substantially lowers one’s performance.
